Standing at 75 meters tall, it is the largest sculpture of an angel in the world. The Angel of the North is a very impressive sculpture in Gateshead.
You can get to the Angel via bus, the 21 Angel bus service between Brandon and Durham stops here, and also goes via Newcastle city centre and Gateshead Interchange, do be advised it is pretty much in the middle of nowhere and there are no food/drink or even toilet facilities nearby, so do plan ahead.
The Angel is such a beautiful structure, it is actually viewed by approximately 33 million people a year, due to people passing on the A1 and East Coast Mainline, but it really is much better up close and in person when physically visiting the statue.
The field it is located in is an ideal place for a picnic with a great review, especially when the weather is nice.

I passed this humongous statute while travelling in the car from south shields and unfortunately didn't have time to stop and get out to fully appreciate it and I would've loved to because I am a fan of Anthony Gormley's work but its huge and its impressive and slightly out the way but I'm glad I saw it and managed to get a quick snap!

I am not so sure how Mr Gormley done this sculpture but he did! He placed it on higher ground in Gateshead so it overlooks the A1 one of the busiest motorways in the Country!
At first I wasn't sure about this as it went up on that mound of land. But it is so iconic and part of the North East now, it isn't until you are right up to it you feel in awe of the workmanship of the sculptor it is absolutely huge. Many people have their photographs taken at the feet of the Angel, children climb the feet to see how far they can go (not far) but now many years later.
This monumentally huge sculpture has put the North East on the map. It is there for all to see and signposted for the A67 turn off. Its worth a quick stop off to have your photograph next to it and to realise just the pure scale of the workmanship. Touch its feet and maybe make a few wishes too.
There are no facilities here, be warned no toilets, nor coffee. But an occasional van I have seen parked up.. Best of luck getting the whole angel in your selfieHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Alex B.Gateshead, United Kingdom01Dec 16, 2021
A lovely sculpture like no other! As a native of the North East, as soon as I see this sculpture it reminds me of home. A must visit if you've never been before. On photos, it looks like a heap of rust however it looks a lot better in the real.

This is a fantastic and stunning land mark in the north of England on the outskirts of Newcastle.
The Angel of the North is a completely free attraction and there is also free street/lay by parking. You really cant drive passed it without stopping for a look. Its even more spectacular when your stood beneath its wings or by its feet.
My daughter also loved it and theres grassed areas for the kids to run around. You can stay as long as you like, or till the kids get board. But its a great place to stop off and stretch your legs, even if you're just passing by.
Theres sometimes an ice cream van, but no toilets thoughHelpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype User (Nathan…)Bathgate, United Kingdom202214Jul 1, 2008
The now iconic Antony Gormley sclupture, is definitely the symbol that tells you your in the north-east. I have past it many times as I drove on the nearby A1, but only recently had the opportunity to see it close up. It stands an impressive 66ft high, and the wing span 178 ft (wider than the Statue of Liberty is tall). It is situated on hill at the southern edge of Low Fell, with the A1 on one side and the A167 into Tyneside on the other, and I believe it is visible to rail travellers on the main east coast line. If you have the time whilst travelling on the A1 - take five and see the Angel close up, it is simply awesome, I just wish there was a landmark as stunning were I live.

Great piece of Art, you do not realise how big it is until your next to it. I got some lovely pics of this. and its free!
It is a must see if your in this area as it speaks so much about what the North East stands for. It really is beautiful, shame when you visit you notice that people have written on her, which is very disrespectful. Lovely views when you are up there and if you want you could have a picnic by her. The parking is by the road as there is no car park. This road leads to Newcastle or Gateshead so you could pay a visit on your way.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype User (Rupert…)Inverness, United Kingdom727138Sep 5, 2011
When it was first erected I though it was a monstrous eyesore more akin to someone strapped to the underside of a light aircraft than an angel, that cost the taxpayer £1,000,000.
I still think this 13 years later but it has become emblematic of Gateshead in almost the same way as the Tyne Bridge for Newcastle (i.e. it's on the local council letterhead).
That said I do look forward to seeing it when I'm driving North. Not because I like it, but it is a fairly unmissable You're Nearly Home sign.
Four Stars, because what ever my personal feelings, it has done a lot for the area.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype User (norths…)Glasgow, United Kingdom378Nov 19, 2008
I know it's not to everyone's taste but this is probably my favourite statue in the UK. It's iconic and in a very short space of time has come to represent the North East of England in an extremely positive way.
After seeing it from afar, last year I decided to go to see it at close quarters and I wasn't disappointed. The golden glow from the statue when the sun hits it is a beauty to behold and hearing the news that a prototype has been valued at at least £1m proves the council were right to spend the money on such an amazing structure.
People in the North East should be justly proud of what the Angel has achieved for their region.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
