Benbulben and the Bluebells

If you are looking for a beautiful walk in Sligo, check out the Gortarowey Forest Walk. It’s a short drive out of Sligo town on the N15 heading to Donegal. You’ll see a right turn at a thatched cottage after the Yeats Tavern (it’s signposted). There’s been a lot of work done there recently on the carpark and what looks like an extension to the walk (although this walk part isn’t open yet at the time of writing).

I got there at 8am and the carpark was already quite busy, just be careful on the drive up, it’s a very narrow road and some people go too fast.

Anyway back to the walk, if you want to get up close to the mighty Benbulben – and you don’t want to climb it – this is the walk for you. It’s a flat enough looped walk that’s lovely in any season, but especially beautiful when the bluebells are out. There is a field full of bluebells right at the foot of Benbulben. If you park in the carpark and take a walk down the road signposted Benbulben Farmhouse Bed and Breakfast you will get a great view of them.

I took my photos from the roadside as the land would be private. You can see enough from the road anyway. You can also see bluebells on the Gortarowey walk too. If you go on the looped walk on a clear day you will also see stunning views of Mullaghmore and Classiebawn Castle.

You can check out the full details of the walk over at Sligo Walks.
