EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Michigan State rising junior John Patrick Mullane defeated eighth-seeded Luke Bambridge of Great Britain in the first round of the singles main draw at the Edwardsville Futures Tournament on Wednesday, 6-2, 6-4. Bambridge was ranked No. 564 in the world.
The White Lake, Michigan, native reached the main draw after advancing through three qualifying rounds. He was one of eight players to qualify for the main draw.
Mullane will face Vullnet Tashi of Switzerland in the second round on Thursday.
Mullane, who compiled a 16-13 singles record during the 2013-14 season at MSU, earned second-team All-Big Ten and Academic All-Big Ten honors this past season.
