Easton School Board Funds Library, CIT, NCC

Easton's library asks schools for same level of funding as last year.

The has agreed to fund Easton's library for one more year.

The board voted Tuesday night to approve a $1.07 million contribution to the library, the same amount requested last year.

In addition to that request, the board also approved the district's annual contributions to the Career Institute of Technology ($2.4 million), Northampton Community College ($1.7 million) and the Colonial Intermedite Unit ($55,872).

"We think this is a very responsible request in a very challenging economy," Jennifer Stocker, the library's director, told the board.

The library gets most of its funding from the district. For the 2012-2013 fiscal year, the schools will provide for more than 60 percent of the library's $1.7 million budget.

Last year, was one of the things the school board considered cutting in order to balance the budget.

This year, the district is still . The board voted Tuesday to waive its right to go over a 2.2 percent tax increase set by the state.
