Remedial Strategies

Addressing the vapor intrusion pathway can be done in a multitude of ways. The most common methods for remediation of soil vapor intrusion are soil vapor extraction, bio-venting, phytoremediation, and air sparging.

Soil Vapor Extraction

This technique uses vacuum blowers and extraction wells to induce gas flow through the subsurface in order to collect contaminated soil, which may then be treated or destroyed.

Bio-Venting

Bio-venting uses microorganisms to biodegrade organic materials that are adsorbed (bonded) to soil.

Phytoremediation

Phytoremediation is the process of planting trees and plants to absorb contaminated soil and water.

Air Sparging

Air sparging is the injection of air into contaminated groundwater/soil to drive volatile and semi-volatile contaminants into the overlying vadose zone through volatilization.
