This is a stacked One-Liners today. The music just plain kills. I wasn’t sure I’d have time for these, but lately I’ve been listening to so much great music I can’t just wait to post one of these columns every three weeks or something. We live in dark times and you need quality art to get you through it.
I Break Horses – “Death Engine”
A gorgeously transcendent number that sounds like Johnny Jewel’s various acts crossed with classic 4AD. From the forthcoming album Warnings, due May 8 on Bella Union/PIAS.
Sébastien Tellier – “A Ballet”
The master has returned with a beautiful gem of a single, this time with UK-based Jam City picking up production duties. Vehlinggo readers might remember Jam City for their dub version of Tellier’s and Dita Von Teese’s “Porcelaine.” This new number is allegedly the lead single from a forthcoming solo studio album, his first since 2014’s L’Aventura — though he’s released many-a-soundtrack and collab since then. Sally Dige – “It’s You I’m Thinking Of”
Sally Dige is one of my favorite darkwave/post-punk revival musicians of the past several years. She has a knack for pairing catchy hooks with richly nuanced dark sonics — and her voice is like no other. This new cut is another gem from her.
Wild Nothing – Laughing Gas EP
I love Wild Nothing — I have since their C86-laden debut album, Gemini, in 2010, when Jack Tatum was fussing about in his bedroom. I fucking love Wild Nothing’s EPs, because it sounds like Tatum and friends have a chance to let loose and try out new things. This new EP is the epitome of that. Do not sleep on this release, especially the vinyl. Out now via Captured Tracks (link in embed).
Makeup and Vanity Set – To Live and Die in LA (Original Podcast Soundtrack)
Lakeshore Records has been releasing, and will release, the excellent scores that Makeup and Vanity Set has crafted for Tenderfoot TV’s various podcasts. You might recall reading our interview about podcast scoring, which focused on MAVS’s work on Up and Vanished, among other things. (And don’t forget: a new Vehlinggo Presents vinyl release via Burning Witches Records is coming in under a couple weeks that MAVS helped me curate.)
Karl Steven – Come To Daddy (ORiginal Motion Picture Soundtrack)
The Elijah Wood-starring, Ant Timpson-directed horror flick is out now in select theatres and my besties at MONDO/Death Waltz have released Karl Steven’s evocative score. Don’t miss this.
Hotel Pools – Constant
This beautifully engaging album came out last year, but now you can get it in a limited-edition “tangerine galaxy” variant. Link is in the embed. Bliss guaranteed.
David Kristian – Relevance and Serendipity
Sounds like Klaus Schulze in hell. Out now via Giallo Disco Records.
Hatchback – Year of the Dragon
This masterpiece came out in 2018 on Lo Recordings. However, I’m not convinced enough people have heard this album, which represents Hatchback’s return after a seven-year hiatus.
