The Death of Ophelia is a Romantic painting by Eugne Delacroix. This painting portrayed the death of Ophelia, a character in Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. This painting was a part of Hamlet’s series devoted to Hamlet and sought to show the scenes that led to the unraveling of Hamlet’s mind. Ophelia clutches onto a branch as she dies in the river. Delacroix focused on her flowing garments which blend into nature as she dies. He also shows the water and forest in the background to emphasize the relationship between nature and femininity.
