Cornish Pasty Co. opens new location on Mill Avenue in Tempe

Mill Avenue is getting a new spot to eat cheap and fill up for lunch, dinner or a late-night snack, or enjoy a few drinks with friends, a winning combination for college students.

Cornish Pasty Co. opened its fourth Valley location and fifth overall on Monday, March 14, on Mill Avenue near Fifth Avenue in Tempe, a little over a mile away from the original location on University and Hardy drives. The 1,000-square-foot restaurant will serve a limited menu that will change weekly (with a few specials not offered at the other branches) and has a full bar.

For those who haven't been to Cornish Pasty Co. before, pasties are flaky, filling pastries stuffed with meat and potatoes, originating in 13th-century England as a convenient lunch for miners.

Cornish Pasty Co. owner and Cornwall native Dean Thomas took that idea to the next level, not only serving the traditional Oggie pasty (steak, potatoes, onion and rutabaga), but creative ones such as the Royale with cheese (hamburger, french fries, grilled onions, mushrooms, bacon, Cheddar Swiss blend); the Mexican (Mexican-spiced steak strips, potatoes, eggs, jalapeños and Cheddar); and the Lamb Vindaloo (lamb, potatoes and spicy vindaloo sauce). Each pasty comes with a dipping sauce, and a variety of vegetarian pasties also are available.

Thomas expects to open the highly anticipated downtown Phoenix location, at Central Avenue and Monroe Street, in another month or so.
