Pity Stormont missed out on Timmy’s mallet magic
Early morning TV in the 1980s was a strange place — and maddest of it all was Timmy Mallett with his Wide Awake Club and Wacaday.
Weird spectacles, garish outfits, a riot of mayhem and colour, he went on to become one of the “most annoying” campmates in I’m A Celebrity once his TV career faded — and even that was 16 years ago.
Now a TikTok star, thanks to his cycling blogs, the 68-year-old is touring the UK and Ireland as part of a fundraising campaign — and he still likes to cause a scene. As he pedalled up the hill towards Stormont yesterday, we’re not sure who would have been the most disappointed to see it shut for the Easter recess: the public for not getting to see Timmy whack a politician over their head with his famous mallet; Timmy for not getting the chance to do just that; or perhaps the politicians themselves, for if there’s one thing they love it’s a good photo opportunity.
He’s still a familiar face for those of a certain age, a few of whom likely shout his catchphrase “blaaah” as he passes, leaving the youth of today looking on in bemusement.
