Carol Burnett has been making television audiences laugh since she first started out in the industry nearly 60 years ago. Now, the comedian, 85, is receiving the first-ever Golden Globe lifetime achievement award at the 2019 ceremony. Carol's Career Kicked Off in the Late 1950s

Carol’s first acting credit on IMDB is The Paul Winchell Show in 1955, but her big break was on The Garry Moore Show in 1958. She recently recalled her last episode on the variety series, where Garry and her cast mates decided to “foul up” the sketch and see how she reacted. “I thought everybody was crazy,” she said. “That was fun."
Carol married her "college sweetheart" Don Saroyan in 1955, though the couple divorced in 1962. She went on to tie the knot with Joe Hamilton in 1963, who was a producer for several of the shows Carol starred in, including The Garry Moore Show, Carol and Company, and Carol Plus 2. The pair had three daughters together, Carrie, Jody, and Erin. They divorced in 1984, and sadly, he died of cancer in 1991, according to The New York Times.

She Started Going After TV Movies in the Early '60s

Carol played Princess Winnifred in the musical Once Upon a Mattress, which was adapted from the popular Broadway play based on The Princess and the Pea. The role was her first major TV movie, following Calamity Jane in 1963.

Her "Mad About You" Role Came a Few Years Later

Carol first made her appearance on the long-running '90s hit in 1996. She played Helen Hunt's mom, according to The Baltimore Sun, and reprised her character 10 times until the sitcom ended in 1999.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Carol's eldest daughter, Carrie, died in 2002 from cancer that had started in her lungs and spread to her brain, according to People. She penned a touching memoir about their relationship in 2014, titled Carrie and Me: A Mother-Daughter Love Story.

At the 77th annual event, Carol was the first-ever to receive the accolade, which pays homage to those who have made a significant impact in TV.
