JUNYA WATANABE Autumn/Winter '21

JUNYA WATANABE Autumn/Winter '21

Junya Watanabe took inspiration from punk rock culture as he channeled the energetic and rebellious spirit of the music scene with his hybrid patchwork design for his eponymous label’s Autumn/Winter ‘21 collection.

Led off with explosive rock music and flashing lights, the runway collection was filled with vintage-inspired band tees paying homage to the greats of the past decade: Aerosmith, KISS, The Who, The Rolling Stones, and others. Yet, rather than reproducing what’s already available, Junya Watanabe integrates his rework ethos, applying pleated fabrics and contrasting colors to create new silhouettes and color schemes. Even within the sub-culture theme, the label doesn’t lose sight of its signature style. They continue their collaboration with Levi’s for reconstructed denim pieces including jeans re-worked into a denim skirt and a pleated fabric stitched into the outseam for a flattering, wide-leg fit. A highlight of the collection is trench coats and tees seamlessly integrated with Baroque scarves from the Versace archive. These patterns are just a few among the Nordic, camouflage, tartan check, and flower patterns the fill the eclectic collection.
