Shoppers voted for their favourite ‘Face of Loughborough Markets’ to commemorate the 800 years anniversary of Loughborough Markets and Fair.

Charnwood Borough Council displayed a selection of photos showcasing market traders’ individual characters in Loughborough town centre on Saturday August 21 and encouraging people to choose their favourite picture.

Cllr Jenny Bokor, lead member for Loughborough, said: “We are proud of our Loughborough Markets and these photos are great way to continue to mark the 800-year anniversary of the markets and fair.

“Some of these traders are part of a legacy stretching back several generations on the market.

“Thank you to everyone who voted, we hope that these photos show exactly how the traders do such a fantastic job on Loughborough Markets today.”

Residents were invited to vote for the ‘Face of Loughborough Markets’ by writing their favourite photo number on a voting slip and posting it into a voting box.

The winning votes were revealed on the day and it was a tied decision between photo numbers 76 (Donna Purdy of Donna's flowers) and 78 (Andrew Smith of Smith's Fruit and Veg) with ten votes each.

There were 80 photos displayed and photo numbers 48 (Paul and Carol staff of Belvoir Bakery), 5 (Andrew Earland of Earland Bros), 51 (Amy, Winnie Cooling and Chris Neale of Cooling butchers) and 77 (Tony Simon's of Tony's Eggs) were also very popular receiving seven votes each.

The photos will be moved to a display inside the Town Hall where people can continue to view the collection and delight in the charm of the local traders.
