Ben Bulben is known by several names, including Benbulbin, and Binn Ghulbain in Irish, translating roughly as “Gulban’s Peak” or “jaw-shaped peak”.

Its unique flat shape, pleated edges and flat roof have earned it the local nickname of Sligo’s “Table Mountain”, and it’s part of the Dartry mountain range.

The mountain peaks at 526 metres. Its summit offers breathtaking views over Slieve League in Donegal, and attracts ambitious hikers every year to enjoy this atypical setting.

Ben Bulben deeply inspired W.B. Yeats, one of Ireland’s most famous poets. This iconic mountain was a constant source of inspiration in his work, providing a dramatic and mystical backdrop for his poems.

Most notable is his poem “Under Ben Bulben”, in which he explores themes such as mortality, Irish history and the role of the artist.

Yeats was so attached to this region that he chose to be buried nearby, in Drumcliff Cemetery, under the imposing shadow of Ben Bulben, in accordance with his own wishes as expressed in his poem.

Ben Bulben mountain is one of the most popular climbing areas.

The south face, in particular, is the best place to dig your crampons into the mountain’s limestone and black schist.

The slope is less steep than on the north side, which is considered very dangerous for any climbing approach. (For safety’s sake, prefer the south to the north). Note above all that Ben Bulben mountain is very windy: it’s often very cold there, and good equipment is a must.

Once you’ve reached the top of the mountain, you’ll be fully rewarded with a magnificent view of County Sligo and its beaches, where the Atlantic never ceases to sculpt the coastline with its waves. Don’t forget to immortalize the moment with a few photos: they’ll be hard to miss, as the view is so breathtaking whatever the weather!

If you’re not too keen on climbing, it’s still possible to hike around the mountain, between Sligo’s valleys and beaches. There’s no shortage of roads and trails, and all you have to do is wander around as you please to discover some magnificent, unspoilt scenery!
