Imagine a lighthouse rubbing shoulders with the fury of the ocean… A lighthouse totally cut off from the world, accessible only by a bridge over an ocean chasm… This is how you might describe Mizen Head, an isolated lighthouse on a rock barely connected to Ireland by a gigantic suspension bridge! The place is breathtaking, and the visit will leave you with unforgettable memories!

To visit this famous 1910 lighthouse, you’ll first need to visit the Visitor Centre at Mizen Head, where you’ll be shown a comprehensive exhibition on the hard life of men living in lighthouses. The presentation will trace the history of the Mizen Head lighthouse, built in the early 20th century to provide better ocean surveillance on the Irish west coast.

Once the exhibition is over, it’s time for the most exciting part: the trip over the suspension bridge! The lighthouse itself is located on an island linked by a steel bridge, suspended over 300 metres above sea level. If you’re afraid of heights, don’t look down: you’ll see the swirls of the raging ocean as it violently crushes its rollers against the cliff! (An impressive and fantastic view, but recommended for non-acrophobics…).

Once you’ve crossed the bridge, you can admire the sumptuous panorama offered by the heights of the south-west coast, with their breathtaking view of Fastnet Rock. You’ll then have the chance to take photos, followed by a visit to the Mizen Head lighthouse.

A guide will then be happy to show you the different parts of the construction, right up to its summit, where a set of optical lenses allows boats to find their way thanks to its light.

On this tour, you’ll explore the “Keeper’s House”, then access a multimedia room featuring a video on the precariousness of life in a lighthouse.
