Alexa Chung on why we should support small businesses this Christmas

"I love anything original where you can feel the personality and passion of the owner"

One of the most sustainable ways to shop is to be more considered and intentional with your purchases; researching ethical labels, buying from designer resale sites, and investing in classic pieces that you'll keep forever. But this mindful approach to shopping should also extend to supporting small businesses.

Designer and model Alexa Chung has shared some of her favourite "celebratory" independent shops and restaurants in support of the American Express Shop Small campaign, which aims to encourage the nation to "shop small" throughout the festive season and beyond.

"I am a magpie and still really enjoy the tactile experience of in-person shopping," she tells us. "Visiting independent shops and restaurants appeals to me because I love anything original where you can feel the personality and passion of the owner. Shopping small - particularly for gifts - just feels more special and unique to me and I’m happy to support business owners in this way."

Below, discover six of Chung's favourite independent businesses:

Aimé

“I like the well-selected array in Aimé and their own brand of pie crust shirts are irresistible. They also often have good party blouses by Isabel Marant and great gift ideas."

“Pentreath & Hall sells an elegant selection of things for the home, and if you play your cards right I might just buy you a couple of their ionic column cream candlesticks and Mykonos dinner candles in brilliant blue.”

Three Sheets

“I love Three Sheets bar in Dalston which is special and vibey and reminds me a lot of the types of bars you get in New York. Their Old Fashioned cocktails are as sumptuous as their cheese boards and it feels like only those in the know happen upon it.”
