The Galway Bay Hotel in Salthill is only a stone’s throw away from the Ardilaun Hotel, the scene of the infamous Garglegate interview with former Taoiseach Brian Cowen on Morning Ireland in September 2010.

Mr Cowen was a little worse for wear after staying up late for a sing-song the night before at his party’s think-in.

Mr Varadkar said he would not be partaking in a session like that.

“I do enjoy a sing-song, but I think an early night and a swim might be the best course before appearing on Morning Ireland.”

Mr Cowen’s unfortunate interview led many to believe that he was still under the influence of alcohol and the story went viral worldwide.

The floodgates of criticism opened when current Tánaiste posted this in a tweet: "God that was an uninspiring interview by Taoiseach this morning - he sounded halfway between drunk and hungover and totally disinterested."

Since then Mr Cowen has claimed that he was “not jarred” and that
sleep apnoea and above all, Twitter, was the problem that morning.

"It (the Morning Ireland interview) sounds clogged up when you listen to it.

"I do have that sleep apnoea problem, but anyway that doesn't matter.

"Because it is not the reason why it all happened, it happened because
of Twitter.

"If there was no Twitter there wouldn't have been a word about it. I wasn't jarred."
