The tweet came in the early hours of Monday morning and has since been deleted.
Independent MEP Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan has said his Twitter account was hacked after a late night tweet came from his account regarding former Green Party candidate Saoirse McHugh.
Flanagan’s account tweeted “Sapirse mchugh photo skinny dipping [sic]” at 2.50 am on Monday morning.
It might have been a reference to photos of McHugh swimming which previously appeared in the Guardian newspaper.
The tweet has since been deleted, although screenshots are circulating online, and the MEP has said that his account was “compromised” and he is working to establish what happened.
“Have just changed my password. I believe my account was compromised. I am contacting to twitter to establish what’s has happened. Some nasty people out there. Mind yourselves,” Flanagan wrote on Twitter.

Earlier today, McHugh confirmed to the Irish Examiner that Flanagan had been in touch regarding the incident to explain the situation.
She said she had not aware of the matter but accepted his explanation.
