Brigitte Bardot has made a rare public appearance after going through a terrifying health scare.

The actress, who turned 89 on September 28, was spotted going for a drive in the south of France as she celebrated her 89th birthday. The starlet was spotted driving an old white mini van from her luxury villa La Madrague in Saint-Tropez to her property in La Garigue.

She was sen sporting a dark long-sleeved top and oversized glasses as she swept her hair away from her face in a stylish up-do for the outing.

This comes after Brigitte was helped by emergency services when she started suffering from breathing difficulties in July. Ambulances had to be called to her home in the south of France with her husband, Bernard, d'Ormale confirming the news. He also said emergency services got the wrong address at first.

He told Var-matin: "It was around 9 a.m. when Brigitte had trouble breathing. [Her breathing] was stronger than usual but she did not lose consciousness. Let's call it a moment of respiratory distraction."

The paramedics put Brigitte on oxygen and stayed at the couple's home for some time to keep an eye on her. Her husband added: "Like all people of a certain age, she can no longer bear the heat. It happens at 88 years old. She must not make useless efforts."

Brigitte became a huge symbol of the 1950 and 60s for her acting and is now known for being an animal activist. She was just 15 when she found fame when she appeared on the cover of Elle which brought her an acting offer for the film Les Lauriers sont coupés.

In 1957, she achieved international recognition for her role in And God Created Woman and was the topic of philosopher Simon de Beauvoir's essay The Lolita Syndrome.

In 1973, she retired from the entertainment industry after starring in 47 films, recording 60 songs and performing in several musicals.

Brigitte has had more that one romance in her life as she has been married four times. She married her first husband director Roger Vadim when she was only 18 years old.

Her next marriage was to Jacques Charrier, with the pair welcoming her only child, Nicolas-Jacques Charrier in 1960. Her third marriage, between 1966 and 1969, was to German millionaire Gunter Sachs. She then married her fourth and current husband Bernard in 1992 and they have been together ever since.
