A man in his 60s has been pronounced dead after being recovered from the sea off Dollymount strand in north Dublin around 1.30pm today.

This latest death brings to six the number of people who have died in lakes or seas this week.

A spokesperson for Howth Coast Guard said Dollymount beach lifeguards and an Irish Coast Guard unit from Howth were on Dollymount's Bull Wall when notified of an unconscious swimmer in the water nearby.

The person was brought to shore and with help from off-duty medical personnel, CPR commenced quickly.

A National Ambulance Service vehicle arrived on the scene along with paramedics from Dublin Fire Brigade.

With a lot of traffic in the area, Coast Guard personnel and gardaí cleared an emergency access route for paramedics.

The man was brought to the shore from the sea and pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has been removed to Dublin City Mortuary for post mortem and enquiries are ongoing.

A Coast Guard spokesperson said: "Remember if you see someone in trouble on the beach, cliff or water call the Coast Guard at 112 or 999.

"Don't assume someone else has made the call."

This latest death is the sixth water-related tragedy this week.

A 13-year-old boy died in the Canal Court area of Scarva, Co Down, on Monday, after he got into difficulty in the water, while swimming with friends.

A 15-year-old boy who was rescued from Lough Sheelin on Tuesday afternoon later died in hospital. The lake is located at a meeting point of counties Westmeath, Meath and Cavan.

On Wednesday evening, a 29-year-old woman died in a drowning incident on the Longford-Cavan border.

It is understood that the mother-of-two got into difficulty while attempting to assist one of her children who was in the water at Swan Lake outside Gowna village.

In a separate incident, a man in his 70s drowned in Co Leitrim, on Wednesday night.

The alarm was raised at Spencer Harbour, Drunkeeran, when the man who was snorkelling failed to return.

In Northern Ireland, a 55-year-old man died following an incident in the Lough Melvin area of Co Fermanagh on Wednesday morning.
