Airport operator daa said today that the rollout of new and improved security scanning technology at Dublin Airport will continue over the coming months.

Around one third of Dublin's Arport's more than 30 existing X-ray scanners have already been replaced by the C3 scanners, which allow passengers to leave all liquids and laptops inside their cabin bags.

The new machines work like CT scanners in hospitals to generate 3D images of passengers' bags.

The airport is on track to have replaced all scanners in both of its terminals by October 2025, ahead of the regulatory deadline of the end of December 2025.

The daa said that after a 12-month trial of the scanners in a number of lanes in Dublin Airport's two terminals, it has agreed a supply and support partnership with Smiths Detection.

The deal will last for 12 years and will also include the rollout of C3 scanners at Cork Airport, which is also operated by daa.

The eighth C3 scanner become operational in Terminal 2 this week and works will continue over the coming months to replace all scanners in the terminal by October.

"The rollout in Terminal 1 will take a little longer, with some reconfiguration works required to accommodate the new scanners, which are much bigger and heavier than the existing scanning machines," Gary McLean, Managing Director of Dublin Airport, said.

"By the end of May we'll have four C3 scanners operational in T1 and then with a very busy summer ahead, installation works will pause for the months of June, July and August, before resuming in September," Mr McLean said.

"The full installation of C3 scanners in Terminal 1 will be complete by October 2025," he added.

Dublin Airport today reminded passengers due to travel over the coming months that they should continue to prepare for security screening as normal.

"Once all scanners have been replaced, passengers will no longer have to remove liquids or electronics from hand luggage when going through security screening," he said.

"For the moment, there's no guarantee that you will be selected for a screening lane which has a new C3 scanner, so passengers should continue to prepare as normal or security, ensuring all liquids are under 100ml, with any laptops and tablets ready to be removed," he advised.
