Derval O’Rourke has been forced to withdrawn from the IAAF World Indoor Championships which will take place in Doha, Qatar from March 12-14 due to a hamstring injury.

The former World Indoor champion has had a turbulent lead up to these championships with a calf injury forcing her to miss weeks of pre-season training, followed by a bout of sickness which forced her out of the Aviva Grand Prix in Birmingham.

Despite these challenges the Cork woman displayed her current form when running a seasonal best of 8.00 seconds in Norway last weekend.

The resilient athlete will now turn her attention to the European Championships in Barcelona this Summer.

All medal hopes now rest with David Gillick, who was awarded with the Crowne Plaza athlete of the month following his performance in Aviva Grand Prix when he equalled his own Irish Indoor Record of 45.52 seconds.

The time currently ranks him as the fourth fastest in the world this season.
