'We're out the gap': The 2 Johnnies leaving 2FM after two years

The 2 Johnnies are leaving 2FM

Drive It with The 2 Johnnies is coming to an end on RTÉ 2FM later this month.

The Tipperary duo have been fronting the show for over two years and will host their final show on May 31.

They said they would miss the “unreal craic” on air.

“We came in with the idea to have a laugh on the afternoons and cheer people up and get more mad scones on the radio from every county in Ireland telling stories and auld yarns. After two and a half years my jaws need a rest from all the laughing,” Johnny Smacks said, thanking their listeners and those working behind the scenes for their support, adding: “Who knows, we may be back on the radio someday, but for now as we say on the show… We’re out the gap!”

Johnny B said the show made him “proud to be Irish to talk with the nation every evening” and promised to “keep the mixer going and the ball pucked out.”

Head of RTÉ 2Fm, Dan Healy paid tribute to the pair for their humour and music choices, saying the team a 2FM is “sad to see them go”.

“Johnny B and Johnny Smacks have brought their original South Tipp humour and interesting music choices to 2FM audiences right across Ireland. The listenership for the drivetime show has been very strong from the very start and the most recent listenership results continued that trend.”

RTÈ 2FM will announce its summer schedule in the coming weeks. It follows the news that Doireann Garrihy is also leaving the station this month.

Two weeks ago, she announced that she is leaving RTÉ 2FM after five years, also presenting her final show on 2FM Breakfast with Doireann, Donncha and Carl on Friday, May 31.

Garrihy said she decided to leave “for ventures new” and will miss her breakfast show co-hosts Donncha O’Callaghan and Carl Mullan.
