Gardaí are hunting for two armed men who beat three people during a violent burglary in their Cork city centre apartment.

The men, who were armed with blunt force instruments, including an iron bar, set upon the occupants in their bedrooms after they entered a flat on Millerd St, a narrow city centre lane off Grenville Place and close to the Mercy University Hospital, at around 6am on Wednesday.

They subjected the occupants, two women and a man, all Chinese nationals and all aged in their 30s, to a sustained and violent beating before they ransacked the property and left.

The victims suffered lacerations, broken ribs and one of them suffered a fracture to one of his arms.

A sum of cash was reported stolen during the course of the incident.

The alarm was raised a short time later and gardaí and paramedics rushed to the scene.

All three victims were taken to Cork University Hospital where they received treatment for what gardaí described as serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The apartment was sealed off for a full technical examination by garda forensic experts.

Gardaí have conducted door-to-door enquiries in the area and they have harvested CCTV from a number of premises in and around the inner city area in a bid to trace the movements of the attackers before and after the attack.

No arrests had been made as of Wednesday night as investigations by detectives at the Bridewell Garda Station continued.

Gardaí issued an appeal for anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in and around the Millerd St area or surrounds between 5.30am and 6.30am on Wednesday, or for anyone with information about the incident, to contact them at Bridewell Garda Station in Cork on 021-494 3330.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Dublin arrested seven people and seized 31 vehicles, quantities of drugs, and weapons during a series of 44 coordinated searches and checkpoint in across north west Dublin.

The ‘day of action’ was mounted to target vehicles “suspected of involvement in dangerous driving incidents" and to disrupt the sale and supply of controlled drugs in the Garda K District, which includes Blanchardstown, Finglas and Cabra.

Among the vehicles seized were three high-powered motorbikes, nine scrambler motorbikes, three quad bikes, a moped, eight e-scooters, two e-bike and five cars.

Gardaí also seized €5,000 worth of cannabis, €100 of cocaine, a meat cleaver, an axe, a baseball bat, a Stanley knife, a bolt action rifle and a sum of cash.

Twenty penalty point notices were issued for various road traffic offences.

Seven men were arrested for various drug, road traffic, and theft offences.

Separately, gardaí in Dublin arrested two men in connection with a spate of thefts across the Dublin Metropolitan North Division last year.

The arrests relate to 14 separate incidents including burglary, thefts from vehicles and retail-related crime.

Power tools estimated to be worth in excess of €40,000 were reported stolen.

The men, one aged in his 50s and the other in his 20s, were being detained last night under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 as garda investigations continue.
