Met Éireann has issued fresh weather warnings for almost every county in Ireland with further thunderstorms likely across much of the country on Tuesday.

A status orange thunderstorm warning came into effect 1.44pm on Thursday for Tipperary, Waterford, Carlow, Kilkenny and Wexford. The warning is in place until 8pm. 

Met Éireann said the alert will see "very heavy downpours and hail". The impacts include flash flooding, very difficult travelling conditions with poor visibility and potential damage to power lines.

Meanwhile, a status yellow thunderstorm warning is currently in place for Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford, Clare, Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan as well as all of Leinster and Connacht. 

Between now and the time the warning lapses at 10pm, Met Éireann is warning of "thunderstorms and heavy downpours".

It says that the potential impacts include spot flooding, difficult travelling conditions and poor visibility.

National outlook

More generally, Met Éireann says showers will develop across much of the country by the early afternoon, and these will turn heavy by the late afternoon and evening. 

"Intense downpours and thunderstorms" may follow, the forecaster says. 

Highest temperatures on Tuesday will range from 15C to 19C in light northerly or variable winds.

Tuesday night will see heavy showers and thunderstorms continuing for a time, before they ultimately ease before Wednesday morning. Temperatures on Tuesday night will fall back to around 7C to 11C in light northwesterly winds.

Wednesday will begin with scattered showers, though these will be somewhat lighter than those seen in previous days. 

Patchy light rain and drizzle will push into the northeast from the evening. Highest temperatures on Wednesday will range from 13C to 17C.

Conditions will turn mostly dry on Thursday, with temperatures returning closer to average on both days. It will however become somewhat wetter on Saturday, according to Met Éireann's provisional forecast for the weekend.
