Met Éireann issues status orange and yellow thunderstorm warnings

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow Thunderstorm warning for Connacht.

Met Éireann has issued a status orange thunderstorm warning for four counties.

The warning, for Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo, will come into effect at 3pm on Monday and will remain in place until 9pm.

According to the forecaster, the thunderstorms will be "slow-moving" but may bring heavy downpours and "potentially large hail". Impacts include flash flooding, very difficult travelling conditions with poor visibility, and potential damage to powerlines.

Elsewhere, a status yellow thunderstorm warning has been issued for all counties in Connacht, as well as Cavan, Longford, Offaly and Westmeath. That warning kicked in at 4.40pm and will also end at 9pm.

Potential impacts may include spot flooding, difficult travelling conditions, and poor visibility.

Meanwhile, temperatures have reached highs of 23C on Monday but showers will develop later in the day. They will mainly impact the northwest and across parts of the midlands.

In the rest of the country it will be mainly dry and bright with plenty of sunny spells, but it will turn cloudier this evening.

Tuesday will see "a cloudy start" and showers will develop from early morning. "The showers will turn heavy and possibly thundery in the east and south for a time in the afternoon and evening," said Met Éireann.

It will be cooler than Monday on Tuesday, with temperatures set to reach highs of 14C to 18C.

On Wednesday, a cloudy and unsettled start is forecast, with "scattered showers becoming more persistent" in the afternoon.

Isolated showers will continue to spread further east throughout the country by evening. Temperatures are expected to reach highs of 17C.
