A thunderstorm warning has been issued for Cork and four other counties as Met Éireann says 'torrential downpours' are expected in parts with lightning and hail.

The yellow weather warning came into effect at 2pm on Sunday for Cork, Tipperary, Waterford, Carlow and Kilkenny and remain in place until 8pm.

The national forecaster says the weather conditions may lead to travel-related issues, spot flooding and lightning strikes.

Sunday should see many areas remain dry with long sunny spells before showers develop in the afternoon and evening, mainly in the midlands and south.

Met Éireann says heavy and possibly thundery downpours. Temperatures on Sunday may reach as high as 18C to 23C.

Those weather conditions then should die down by Sunday night and remain dry with mostly clear skies.

Looking into next week, Monday should see more spells of sunshine with some showers breaking out in some areas later in the afternoon and evening.

The national forecaster says there is a possibility of thunderstorms developing as well with highs of 18C to 23C expected.

Monday night then will see some showers but dry conditions in some places with long clear spells.

Tuesday then will see rain with the possibility of them turning heavy and thundery.

Met Éireann says localised flooding is possible with temperatures going as high as 19C.

Sunny spells and showers, some heavy are expected on Wednesday with temperatures staying between 14C and 18C.
