An exclusive report by the Daily Record’s Duncan Castles will excite Bayern Munich fans everywhere: according to their information, Bayern Munich has “been granted permission to speak to the Germany international’s representatives with a view to agreeing contractual terms.”
Bayern famously let Sané slip away in 2016, when he left Schalke for Manchester City. Now that Sané is a fixture in the German national team and has thrived in the top flight of English soccer and in the Champions League, Bayern will have more incentive to land the star than ever before. And the interest may be mutual.
Sané has variously been reported to be frustrated at City under former Bayern manager Pep Guardiola. Still only 23 years old, he has rejected several offers to extend his contract with City, which expires at the end of the 2020-2021 season. Sané is reportedly displeased at his status of third choice for playing time.
The Daily Record argues that City does not want to risk “a situation in which the forward runs down his contract and transfer value.” But Bayern would still undoubtedly have to pay a massive transfer fee to land Sané. But they just might do it for Sané. He’s young, he’s German, he’s already an established star, and he’s set in the starting lineup of the German national team.
Sané might also sense trouble ahead for Manchester City as well: according to a new report by the New York Times, UEFA’s investigators have recommended that City be banned from the Champions League for a season as punishment for their violation of UEFA’s financial rules.
The stars could align with Bayern in another way, as well: Bayern had offered Lille €60m to sign winger Nicolas Pépé but balked at his €80m price tag. Now Manchester United might make a formal offer to sign Pépé. Hence, while Bayern appear to have backed away from Pépé on account of his exorbitant price tag, that may have been the right move in hindsight, because they just might take the plunge for the rare opportunity to sign a legitimate German superstar in the making.
