Lanark & Hamilton East MP Jim Hood angers 'Yes' campaign after Scottish independence debate in House of Commons

MSP Christina McKelvie hits back at Labour man's claims

Jim Hood MP debating in House of Commons

MP Jim Hood sparked fury after he insisted he would still vote NO even if Scotland would be better off economically under independence.

The Lanark and Hamilton East member made the controversial comments during a heated debate in the House of Commons on Scottish independence last Thursday.

Mr Hood said: “Even if the SNP was right and there was a grand, great thing at the end of the rainbow for the SNP and its debate for independence, I would still be against it.

“If the Scottish people are going to be better off economically and so on, I would still be against breaking away from the Union.”

But his comments were blasted by his opponents.

SNP member Robbie Castle, a third-year Scottish Literature student at Glasgow University, condemned Mr Hoods comments on social media site, twitter.

Robbie said: “So, my local MP Jim Hood said today 'I don’t care if Scotland could be better off. I’d still vote no.'

“A disgraceful performance from my local MP.”
