The Blues don't expect him to need any further surgery on his knee.
But they want to ensure he'll be fit to play when it recovers, so will get their medics to give him a through examination before confirming the £40m deal.
It is understood Bakayoko is unlikely to be seen on a football pitch for at least six weeks.
That means he'll miss all of Chelsea's pre-season programme and the Community Shield clash with Arsenal.
Bakayoko would also be forced out of the Premier League opener at home to Burnley and trip to Tottenham the following week.
A potential debut could come against Everton on August 26 at Stamford Bridge.
