Showband legend Dickie Rock still gets people shouting “Spit on me Dickie” at him in the street and admits: “I absolutely love it.”

The 78-year-old says he can’t get enough of the slogan first coined by legions of adoring fans in Belfast’s Boom Boom Rooms in the 1960s.

Dickie, who appears on TV3’s Living with Lucy this week, told the Irish Sunday Mirror: “A huge crowd of girls used to gather around the stage.

“Thank God I wasn’t a handsome brute or I would have been in real trouble.

“I still hear it everywhere I go.”

The veteran performer, who divides his time between Ireland and the Costa del Sol with wife Judy, added: “I get it in Spain a lot. People shout it across the street at me. It’s great, I love it.”

Asked about his youthful appearance, Dickie joked he was “born with good genes” but when quizzed on Botox he quipped: “I’m thinking of it.”

Tuesday’s episode of the show sees mum-of-three Lucy Kennedy caddy for Dickie as he spends a day golfing with fellow showband greats Paddy Cole and Sil Fox.

Eurovision singer Dickie revealed: “Lucy was great fun.

“We got on great. I’m very easy-going and she seems like a lovely girl.”
