Rangers, Newcastle and Norwich target bargain transfer for Vitesse defender Danilho Doekhi after impressing in Holland

RANGERS, Newcastle and Norwich are all reportedly chasing a deal for Vitesse Arnhem star Danilho Doekhi.

The Telegraph claims the Dutch centre-back, 22, has caught the eye of the trio after some fine performances in the Eredivisie.

Former Ajax youngster Doekhi is in his third season with Vitesse and has played 18 times in all competitions this term.

He has four caps for Holland’s U21s side and a senior call-up has been touted.

Doekhi is now set to enter the final year of his contract with Vitesse.

But it’s believed the defender is looking for a new challenge abroad.

And that’s put Rangers, Newcastle and Norwich on red alert.

Rangers are eager to make the next step in Europe having won back their domestic title off Celtic.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are ready to strengthen as they look to have staved off relegation under Steve Bruce.

And Norwich are eager to repeat an immediate return to the Championship having secured promotion back to the top.

There could now be an all-out bidding war for Doekhi.

But former Aberdeen, Coventry and Leeds striker Noel Whelan believes Rangers are in pole position to secure a £1.5million move.

He told Football Insider: “When you are talking about a Dutch Under-21 international for less than £10m, it is a bargain.

“The way the transfer market is these days to get a player who has clearly got a lot of talent for less than £2m is truly bargain shopping.

“That is like going to the pound shop. If he is a player that Rangers want badly they would be very happy to pay that.

“If there are players who are available, and with the talent, for that price you are not risking anything.

“If it doesn’t work out you could probably sell him on for a similar fee and even if you couldn’t it is not a huge amount of money in the grand scheme of things.

“It makes it a lot harder when it is £15m. They would not be taking too much of a chance if they signed him.”
