‘Staunch Fianna Fail’ members reaching out to RENUA after Micheal Martin’s u-turn on abortion
The party, who claim to be Ireland's only pro-life political party, say they've been inundated with calls from FF members who feel betrayed by their leader's decision to back abortions up to 12 weeks
RENUA has been inundated with calls from “staunch Fianna Failers” looking to revolt against Micheal Martin after his pro-choice announcement, we can reveal.
Martin’s party has been “severely damaged” by his stance according to Renua councillor John Leahy, who says his phone has been buzzing with people wanting to jump ship.
Leahy told the Irish Sun: “There’s a lot of Fianna Failers who are very unhappy with the stance the party in general are taking. I’ve had a number of lengthy conversations with people in my own constituency who are saying the same thing.
“We’re getting a lot of messages on social media as well as on our personal phones.
“Staunch FF people who would have canvassed for them have contacted me.
"They’re quite simply not happy with how the party is going in this moment in time.
"As they know we’re the only political party in the country that are completely and utterly pro-life.”
Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin angered some of his TDs last week when he announced his support for abortion up to 12 weeks, just 24 hours after the majority of the party said they could not support unrestricted abortion.
FF party leader Micheal Martin angered his TDs last week when he announced his support for abortion up to 12 weeks, 24 hours after the majority of his party told him they could not support unrestricted abortion.
Following any referendum on the Eighth Amendment, the party previously said members will have a free vote in the Dail and Seanad.
A heated meeting is now expected this week when Fianna Fail TDs come together for the first time to discuss Martin’s stance.
Pro-life TDs want to ensure their views receive an equal share of media attention as those of the party leader and health spokesman.
More than 300 people have signed signed a petition seeking Martin’s resignation.
Organiser and party member Sean D Rafter told the Irish Sun people have been left “hurt, disappointed, and angry” after the leader’s solo mission.
He said: “The vast majority of Fianna Fail members are pro-life and they deserve a leader who will represent the party.”
