It is understood that the firework was found by an unsuspecting member of the public outside the church and it exploded in a bin causing some panic.

Members of the Army Explosives Ordnance Disposal team responded to the alert.

A priest told people inside the church that they had to evacuate just after 1pm, according to the Irish Times.

A garda spokesman told the Irish Sun earlier today: "Gardai are currently at the scene of an incident at Christchurch Dublin 8.

"The area is currently cordoned off and the Army Explosives Ordnance Disposal team are currently at the scene and diversions are in place."

The alert lasted a couple of hours and ended with the road reopening around 3.30pm.
